Chinese New Year Puddings

Today is Chinese New Year Eve. So let me present some Chinese puddings.

Pudding 糕 in Chinese sounds like 高 'gao', which means growth, along with going well, getting higher (promoted). So this is why Chinese like eating puddings at Chinese New Year. We eat all kinds of puddings everyday, but 'nan gao' is specially for New Year. Here is the 'nan gao' on our dim sum table yesterday.

New Year Pudding 年糕
It is sweet and sticky, but very yummy
(Nan Gao - Mandarin) (Nin Go - Cantonese)
Home Made Turnip Pudding 蘿蔔糕
My sister and I made this at home yesterday.
The process was slightly complicate, but it was fun!

Chinese Birthday Bun

January 18, 2009
Foo Lum Restaurant, Wanchai, Hong Kong
As I said, I don't always have luck. Tonight is an example. Perhaps it is nearby Chinese New Year, the restaurant is quite full and the service and food are both below par. Their roast goose used to be very good, but tonight is full of fat. The abalone is extremely smelly and is hard and difficult to eat, however expensive. The birthday bun seems to be the best among all dishes.

Bacon and Turkey Frided Rice

Have you tried this before - bacon and turkey fried rice? Chinese fried rice had a perfect combination of chicken and ham. But I like the crispyness of bacon and turkey as well. So I do this experiment today and am successful. Here is my yummy fried rice.

1. Beat one egg
2. Cut bacon and turkey into medium square sheets
3. Brown the bacon
4. Heat a pan and add egg
5. Add turkey and plain rice
6. Add bacon, stir well and dish up
Note: Cantonese cooking is usually light in flavour. Add a few drops of soy sauce as you wish.
