Sweet Rice Dumpling 鹼水粽

Today is Dragon Boat Festival, so I have a sweet dumpling as part of my dim sum lunch. Sweet dumpling is usually served with sugar, but today, Banyan Garden served with syrup which is also very delicious.

On Sunday and public holidays, most dim sum restaurants in Hong Kong have special offers. Banyan Garden had some special priced dim sum, and my sweet dumpling is one of them, only HK$10 (US$1.28), a very good deal.

Hong Kong Lunch Buffet

Lunch date: May 15, 2009
Restaurant: Marriott Cafe, 1/F JW Marriott, Pacific Place
Cost: HK$260 (US$33.3) per person + 10% service charge

Buffets in Hong Kong usually include some Chinese food. In Marriot Cafe, their signature dish - stewed fish maw - is rarely found elsewhere. My colleague had a promotion recently and take us here for celebration. It's my first time to try the fish maw here, its really good. At the Chinese food corner, I also like the Hai Nan Chicken Rice which is very professionally done. The noodle corner is also my favourite. I pick the ingredients and the chef cook for me immediately. Let's have a quick browse of my buffet today.

Classic Hong Kong Dessert

Let me introduce one of the most popular Hong Kong tea set. Many a time I notice in the China Towns of overseas countries, cafes specify that they are selling Hong Kong style milk tea. Hong Kong milk tea is world famous, very rich and smooth. Local Cantonese invented this. Nowadays even McDonalds and five-star hotels start to serve tea of Hong Kong style.

Hong Kong milk tea sells at an average of HK$10 (hot) and HK$12 (iced). Cafe de Coral offers the lowest price of HK$6 at tea time - 2.30pm through 5.30pm.

Egg Tart is one of the most popular desserts of Hong Kong Cantonese. Local bakeries usually sell at around HK$4 each of regular size. Many dim sum restaurants serve egg tarts as dessert, charging averagely HK$13 per dish of 3-4 mini ones.

Seafood Risotto - High Quality Low Price

Today, I decide to add a section of international food to my blog. I come across this beautiful seafood risotto which I can't resist to take a photo. It is even more delicious, more authentic than any other Italian restaurant. Look, it is full of seafoods. Even more amazing, it is only HK$55 (US$7) without service charge, and inclusive of a soup and a drink. I must say this is one of best deals I ever had.

Authentic Mapo Tofu

There are many place in Hong Kong serving mapo tofu. But the most authentic one is from Tanyoto ( 譚魚頭 ). I don't mean to advertise for them, but their product tastes the same as that of Sichuan Restaurant's in Beijing. If you love spicy food, this is the place you must go. Mind you, they are going to paralyse your tongue.

麻婆豆付 Mapo Tofu HK$58 (US$7.4)
口水鷄 Spicy Chicken HK$38 (US$4.9)
Likewise, the spicy chicken here at Tanyoto is the most authentic.
Tanyoto has three branches in Hong Kong, two in Beijing and two in Shanghai. You can also find them in 20 other cities in China.
